Most people, especially those who merely drink coffee to remain functional throughout the day, will be perfectly content with a generic Hamilton Beach or Cuisinart brewer. However, for a select few, the connoisseurs and aficionados, the difference between a generic brewer and the Technivorm-Moccamaster KBT 741 is night and day; it is said to be the Rolls Royce of bulk brewers.

Features of the Technivorm-Moccamaster KBT-741 10-Cup Coffee Brewer

Like most high-end drip brewers, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 is an extremely simple device. It does not boast programmability, it offers no gimmicks, and it lacks even the simplest automation. It’s main, and most important feature is technical excellence.

Behind the chemistry of ideal coffee, brewing lays an incredibly important variable: water temperature. To brew a truly excellent cup of drip coffee, your grinds should be steeped in approximately 200° F water. While most machines struggle to hit a consistent 180° F, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 brews at a controlled 195-205° F from start to finish, every time.

Its incredibly powerful, 1000-watt, dual coil heater, and its insulated hot water siphon are essential to keeping the water temperature high. This, above all else, distinguishes the Technivorm Moccamaster from the droves of generic automatic drip machines.

Once the water is heated to the appropriate temperature, it never again touches plastic – an important point for drip coffee purists. An oversight of this consideration, incredibly common to low-end brewers, is the culprit behind plastic-flavored coffee. With the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741, you’ll taste nothing but coffee.

Unfortunately, unlike Behmor’s Brazen series of brewers, the Moccamaster lacks temperature control. Even though you’ll be brewing excellent coffee each time, minor fluctuations in the water temperature will result in differing flavor expression across batches.

The KBT 741’s showerhead nozzle, which sprays ground coffee with hot water, provides even coverage and saturation for ideal extraction. Although many mid and high-end coffee brewers opt for larger, rounder showerheads, the Technivorm Moccamaster has no issues keeping it small and rectangular.

Another minor, yet notable advantage: the Technivorm Moccamaster brews up to 12 cups (1.8 L) of coffee per batch, a superior figure to the 8 and 10 cup limits found on competing high-end brewers.

To accommodate smaller batches, Technivorm has included a flow control on its filter basket. This is a simple mechanical solution to the problem of under-extraction. Depending on the quantity of coffee you are brewing, you can keep the flow unabated, reduce it by half, or close it off completely. Just be careful not to let the basket overflow.

The Technivorm Moccamaster includes an excellent dual-walled stainless steel carafe, a vacuum thermos design that keeps your coffee hot for up to 5 hours. Two carafe lids are also included alongside the carafe.

The first, a graduated brewing lid, minimizes temperature loss during the brewing process by directing the flow of the dripping coffee through an insulator tube.

The second, a locking lid, creates negative air pressure in the carafe by forming an airtight seal at the neck of the carafe. On the downside, the carafe spout struggles to maintain a consistent stream, which may result in frustration and spills.

For safety, the Technivorm Moccamaster uses a techno-mechanical switch on its base. If the machine detects that the carafe has been removed, it will interrupt the brewing process.

Aesthetics of the Technivorm-Moccamaster KBT-741 10-Cup Coffee Brewer

At first glance, the Technivorm Moccamaster appears deceptively rudimentary; just a series of cones and rectangles. If you look closely enough, however, you might uncover a wealth of complexity.

You may notice the Fibonacci-Esque progression of component size, starting at the smallest foot and ending at the main column; or the off-center, yet satisfying, placement of the Technivorm logo; or the five distinct graduations of the water reservoir, running opposed, yet complementary; or the subtle crescent of matte on the glossy black filter cone.

Eventually, you may realize that there isn’t a single wasted design element in the Moccamaster’s design. Each part simply belongs, and any small change could throw the entire design off balance.

This incredibly balanced, minimalistic design has remained largely unchanged since the Moccamaster’s premier, in the 1970s. This is an incredible feat of design and engineering; It is exceedingly rare for a product design to forestall revision for more than a few years let alone thirty.

Build Quality of the Technivorm-Moccamaster KBT-741 10-Cup Coffee Brewer

Assembled in the Netherlands, Technivorm’s aluminum beast is the epitome of brewer engineering.

Every component of the Moccamaster, from top to bottom, just looks and feels solid.

The machine’s asymmetrical base is sturdy, its welding is seamless, and its only button is solid. The slider feels flimsy, and setting your preferred flow can be a finicky process. Unsurprisingly, several customers have reported cracks and breaks. This, in turn, leads to leaking problems and burn hazards.

Both carafes come with a brew-through lid, which looks like a funnel and ensures that you get a consistent pour from the first to the last no single cup should be stronger or weaker than any other.

Is the Ninja an Iced Coffee Maker?

Sort of.

• Yes, you can make iced coffee by mixing a hot coffee concentrate with ice.
• No, it’s not going to brew a cold beverage. You need to brew over ice.

The Auto IQ’s “Over-Ice” setting will make a coffee concentrate to be brewed over ice. The coffee will melt the ice, diluting the coffee to the optimal iced coffee concentration, and then you can top off with ice to get it nice and cold.

From experience, we can tell you this actually does work. Your iced coffee isn’t overly diluted.

If we’re picking nits, one complaint we have when making iced coffee from home is that even when you can make coffee that isn’t too dilute, the required melting of ice cubes with a hot coffee concentrate leaves tiny ice cube shards that haven’t yet fully melted. That’s still going to happen with this system.

Again, we’re picking nits, but, at the end of the day, you’re still making iced coffee by combining hot (concentrated) coffee with ice.

No, but it makes something pretty darn close that will do just fine in your cappuccino or latte.

Like the iced coffee method above, Ninja’s Auto IQ technology enables it to brew an even more concentrated, espresso-like coffee drink for use in cappuccinos and lattes by selecting the “Specialty” brew setting.

Ninja is smart in avoiding the word “Espresso” and instead calling it “Specialty” because the result isn’t a true espresso.

But still, Ninja does say they can make a coffee concentrate that’s espresso-like.

Can a drip brewer actually do that?

For espresso, it’s all about the pressure

Espresso makers are able to make coffee concentrates because they mix coffee grounds and water under pressure. Industry consensus is that espresso should be brewed at 9 bars of pressure, though some home espresso makers will advertise 15-19 bars of inconsistent pressure.

Drip brewers, like the Ninja Coffee Bar System, aren’t able to generate anywhere near the required pressure. How espresso-like will their “Specialty” brew be?

Ninja makes “espresso-like concentrate”

Instead of just running the requisite volume of water through the grounds, the specialty brew setting pre-infuses the coffee grounds with water for optimal extraction. The process takes around 60 seconds but the result is rather impressive.

The result is a strong coffee concentrate. It’s not an espresso with rich crema, but Ninja’s pre-infusion and water volume control through Auto IQ are able to get as much extraction as could be expected from a drip brewer.

How Good is the Ninja Coffee Bar Frother?

Depending on the Ninja Coffee Bar model you choose, you’ll get either an integrated mechanical frother or a hand-pump frother.

The problem with these frothers? They don’t heat the milk as they froth.

How do they work?

1. Add your volume of milk and microwave for about 60 seconds
2. Immerse the milk in the frothing arm (integrated) or push the plunger rapidly to aerate the milk to the desired volume (manual)

The manual frother, which looks like a French press coffee maker, is microwave safe, so you can do everything in that one vessel. And for about 5-10 seconds of aeration, you’ll be surprised with how much air is incorporated into the milk. When poured into your cappuccino mug, you’ll be able to get about 1.5″ of light foam on top of 2″ of hot milk.
